Air Conditioned Air – where is it going and why am I uncomfortable?
Supply Plenum – allowing cooled or heated air to escape to the attic!
As you can see from these pictures there are two different air flow issues that could be causing your discomfort in your home or business.
The supply plenum supplies the conditioned air to your duct work that distributes the air into the living space or work space. If it is losing that cooled or heated conditioned air into the attic the system will never perform up to it’s ability.
The return plenum pulls the conditioned air back into your heating or cooling system to be reconditioned to the desired temperature you have set at the thermostat. If the return air is pulling in unconditioned air from the attic it will never be able to perform during extreme outdoor weather.
So have your heating and cooling system inspected every season to insure your system is not trying to do something it can’t do. Heat and or Cool outdoor air!

How much does a new A/C or Air Conditioner cost?
The cost for a new a/c unit or system can be very complex. In fact there is not a simple straight forward answer without some detailed information gathered at your home or business.
For example: You have may have a 5-year old complete heating and cooling system and it just went out of factory part warranty coverage and your indoor equipment (furnace and evaporator coil) are in good shape and have more life in them. You may not need to purchase the entire system, just the outdoor a/c condensing unit is all you need. Especially if it operates on the newer 410A refrigerant. So all you need is an estimate for the outdoor equipment and this may save you thousands of dollars in replacement cost.
Another example: You have a 11 year old complete system, operating on R22 refrigerant (R22 is the old refrigerant that is being deleted by the year 2020) and you find out you have a leak in the evaporator coil and the compressor is weak on the outdoor unit when it runs! But the system is a heat pump system set-up on dual fuel (gas furnace inside instead of an air handler) and the furnace has hardly been used because the heat pump has been used for all the heating for your home or business. The furnace may be of value for another 10-years if it is in good shape, which means you may only need to replace the evaporator coil and the outdoor unit -heat pump.
Last example, but here are many I could use: You have a 20-year old complete heating and cooling system and you have had a major failure with the outdoor condensing unit, the compressor has failed and needs to be replaced. The evaporator coil holds a charge but it looks like it is about to fail any minute and the air handler looks like it has been standing in water with all the rust you can see from the outside and inside! It’s time! Time to replace all the equipment and get a new 10-year factory part warranty on a new complete system – indoor and outdoor equipment.

If they don’t offer free on site estimates, then you need to keep calling until you find contractors that will give you free estimates and 2nd opinions. A/C Air Flow Restriction – What is it? Why is the amount of air so slow coming out of my a/c system?
Air Flow Restriction – Loose Insulation inside the air duct system or plenum-causing air flow problems in Cooling or Heating System.
What can cause an air flow restriction in your air-conditioning or heating system? The most common reason is a dirty or clogged air filter. The next most common reason is aging air duct work and or lack of knowledge. For example: air duct dampers are installed in the duct work system and the new home owner or business owner is not aware of them, flexible duct pipe has sagged and now has a kink in the run, there is another air filter in the system up in the attic (double filtering), the evaporator coil is older and has never been cleaned, etc.
Or it could be a unwanted object restricting the air flow in the duct work system that is causing poor air flow into the home or a particular room. See the attached picture – this is a good example of an older system that has experienced a problem with the glue that holds the insulation to the side of the sheet metal plenum, when the glue ages it will allow the insulation to come loose and then restrict the air flow. And ultimately your Cooling/Heating or A/C system works harder to keep you comfortable!

Blocked / Clogged Evaporator Coil on an A/C System
A/C is not working! Call A.I.R. Plus to resolve the issue today.
If air cannot flow across the evaporator coil which is part of your air conditioning system and normally located inside your indoor unit. Cool air will not be produced! It must be free from debris, dust, dirt, hair and other contaminates. Take a look at the attached picture. This coil was so clogged up it could not longer produce cool air and it soaked the area is was located in with drainage issues from frost/ice issues.
The attached picture is that of a coil so dirty and clogged that when we began to brush the dirt off of it just roll off!
Change your air filters regularly to avoid this, please!

A/C Tune-Up and Inspection should include duct work inspection!
The attached picture is of flex duct piping for a central heating and cooling system installed 25 years ago. As you can see the insulation that is to insure the heated or cooled air arrives efficiently to the room or rooms it is to heat or cool has lost it’s ability to do so! In most cases the plastic barrier that holds the insulation to the pipe and insures it does its job, is brittle and can not be reused. So replacing the duct work piping all together is typically the best option.
When you have your air conditioner serviced for the upcoming summer, please insure that part of the inspection and tune-up includes the duct work being inspected for performance issues. In this case the occupants knew there was an issue. The comfort level and performance of the cooling and heating was very poor in this particular room.
