A/C Air Flow Restriction – What is it? Why is the amount of air so slow coming out of my a/c system?

Air Flow Restriction – Loose Insulation inside the air duct system or plenum-causing air flow problems in Cooling or Heating System.

What can cause an air flow restriction in your air-conditioning or heating system? The most common reason is a dirty or clogged air filter. The next most common reason is aging air duct work and or lack of knowledge. For example: air duct dampers are installed in the duct work system and the new home owner or business owner is not aware of them, flexible duct pipe has sagged and now has a kink in the run,  there is another air filter in the system up in the attic (double filtering), the evaporator coil is older and has never been cleaned, etc.

Or it could be a unwanted object restricting the air flow in the duct work system that is causing poor air flow into the home or a particular room. See the attached picture –  this is a good example of an older system that has experienced a problem with the glue that holds the insulation to the side of the sheet metal plenum, when the glue ages it will allow the insulation to come loose and then restrict the air flow.  And ultimately your Cooling/Heating or A/C system works harder to keep you comfortable!

So if you have concerns about the amount of air flow in your home or business, call A.I.R. Plus today for an inspection.

30 Year Old Flexible Air Duct is no longer functionable!

Old - Leaky Duct work

30 Year Old Flex Duct #2

Duct Insulation is gone!

Flexible Duct Piping has been commonly used for over 30 years in residential and commercial HVAC applications and in ductwork setups. However, just like most man made things – they wear out and break down and are no longer doing what they were originally designed to do!

If you see duct work piping in your home or business, that looks like the attached pictures.  You are wasting money in heating or cooling the space the duct work is set-up in.

When you have your Heating and Cooling System serviced and or replaced, make a point to ask your HVAC Contractor what the condition of your duct work is and to provide pictures.  You maybe surprised at the condition, especially if its over 20 years old!

Call 405-618-2247 and allow us to give you an evaluation of your Duct Work System. We will give you information, feedback and suggestions for resolution of your comfort concerns and energy efficiency. Or go to airokc.com for additional information.

How long can my A/C – HVAC Equipment last?

Not your typical A/C Unit

Not your typical A/C Unit

Oldest Thermostat I have seen in service!

Oldest Thermostat I have seen in service!

The attached pictures are of Trane equipment. The outdoor A/C unit was in installed in 1984 and has been in service for 31 years. The thermostat was installed 1977 and has been in service for over 38 years. Is this typical?

How long can I expect my A/C – HVAC Equipment to last? That is a very good question and can be challenging to answer.

But, here are some averages:

Condensing Unit – Outdoor A/C Unit = 15 years. (How much it is used and the environment it is in makes all the difference!)

Heat Pump – A/C Outdoor Unit = 12 years. (Double duty for heating and cooling your home.)

Thermostat = 5 years. (Who uses it? Home Owners, Children, Employees, the general public? They all make the difference!)

Gas Furnace = 18 years. ( Once again is determined by usage, environment and how it’s configured with the overall heating needs of the structure it is heating.)

Air Handler w/Electric Heat = 10 years for the electric heat strips and 18 years for the air handler it’s self. (How and where is it used, environment, set-up with heat pump or whether it is used with regular a/c unit all determine its life span.)

Manufactures typically give a life span of 12 to 15 years to most HVAC Equipment. The key to system longevity is regular maintenance by experienced HVAC professionals like A.I.R. llc.  With proper care, your air conditioning system can last from 15 to 20 years; a gas furnace can run for up to 25 years.

> The information provided for average life spans of HVAC equipment came from ASHRAE Equipment Life Expectancy Chart and from leading manufacturers. <

Commercial HVAC Systems (Cooling and Heating your business!)

Gas - A/C Rooftop Packaged System

Gas – A/C Rooftop Packaged System

In addition to residential heating and cooling services, A.I.R. installs and services light commercial heating and cooling systems.

The attached picture is of a recent installation of a Trane 4-ton Gas – A/C packaged system. The new Trane HVAC system replaced a 20 year old system that was no longer an asset to the company. In fact it had become a liability in the cost for seasonal repairs and in the amount of energy it was using to heat and cool the business.

After analyzing the information for the new system compared to keeping the old system. The company realized that the payback for the investment in the new system would be less than 7 years. After the 7 year period the energy and service savings would be added to the their longterm profit. And with a reliability and durablity of a new Trane system their customers and employees would be comfortable for years to come, as well!

If you have a need for light commercial HVAC service, please call (405)618-2247 today for a free quote or estimate to replace or repair your existing HVAC system.  You may also visit airokc.com for additional imformation.
