Heating and Cooling System Evaporator Coil Issues! Many variables affect the HVAC system in your home or business.
The condition of your air filters, the moisture level of the environment in which the air passes over the evaporator coil, the cleanliness of the evaporator coil, refrigerant leaks, faulty or weak blower motors along with numerous other issues can determine the performance level of your HVAC system. A look at the attached pictures will give you an example of what the results can be if your Heating and Cooling System is not maintained on a regular basis.

The attached pictures are of Trane equipment. The outdoor A/C unit was in installed in 1984 and has been in service for 31 years. The thermostat was installed 1977 and has been in service for over 38 years. Is this typical?
How long can I expect my A/C – HVAC Equipment to last? That is a very good question and can be challenging to answer.
But, here are some averages:
Condensing Unit – Outdoor A/C Unit = 15 years. (How much it is used and the environment it is in makes all the difference!)
Heat Pump – A/C Outdoor Unit = 12 years. (Double duty for heating and cooling your home.)
Thermostat = 5 years. (Who uses it? Home Owners, Children, Employees, the general public? They all make the difference!)
Gas Furnace = 18 years. ( Once again is determined by usage, environment and how it’s configured with the overall heating needs of the structure it is heating.)
Air Handler w/Electric Heat = 10 years for the electric heat strips and 18 years for the air handler it’s self. (How and where is it used, environment, set-up with heat pump or whether it is used with regular a/c unit all determine its life span.)
Manufactures typically give a life span of 12 to 15 years to most HVAC Equipment. The key to system longevity is regular maintenance by experienced HVAC professionals like A.I.R. llc. With proper care, your air conditioning system can last from 15 to 20 years; a gas furnace can run for up to 25 years.
> The information provided for average life spans of HVAC equipment came from ASHRAE Equipment Life Expectancy Chart and from leading manufacturers. <

The attached pictures are of a 30+-year old gas furnace with stamped-steel slotted burners. It appears the burners themselves have never been removed to be cleaned and therefore the orange colored flames are a by product of dirt and dust particles and possiblly incomplete combustion of the natural gas fuel. A proper flame color should be, dark blue at the bottom, light blue in the middle with a slight orange tip at the top. Yellow tips indicate an air starved flame emitting poisnous carbon monoxide and the gas furnace should be serviced immediately!
Verifying the gas pressure and cleaning the burners, along with a carbon monoxide test, are necessary on older gas furnaces to insure you have a safe envoirment for your family. A 26-point furnace check-up which includes the testing of the gas pressures and the carbon monoxide test should be perfromed every fall season. Oklahoma Natural Gas Co provides a $30 rebate for their cusotmers who have this service performed by a qualified contractor.
