The attached picture is of flex duct piping for a central heating and cooling system installed 25 years ago. As you can see the insulation that is to insure the heated or cooled air arrives efficiently to the room or rooms it is to heat or cool has lost it’s ability to do so! In most cases the plastic barrier that holds the insulation to the pipe and insures it does its job, is brittle and can not be reused.  So replacing the duct work piping all together is typically the best option.

When you have your air conditioner serviced for the upcoming summer, please insure that part of the inspection and tune-up includes the duct work being inspected for performance issues. In this case the occupants knew there was an issue. The comfort level and performance of the cooling and heating was very poor in this particular room.
